Untimely

Wikiloops Track – https://www.wikiloops.com/backingtrack-jam-222891.php

When I was learning music, bass and guitar, I was lucky enough to become friends with an individual from my high school, JohnD. I didn’t know jack shit about timing, but understood just enough to keep things going/flowing. You see, JohnD, comes from a family of music/musicians, and he could play anything, drums, guitar, bass, piano, vocals, etc. While in high school, we got to play in a band and just jam out, “for funs”, as we would say. Since he was primarily a drummer, and looking back on this now, he would show me timing and changes. He would explain it to me, like “it’s 7/8, then back to 8/8, but on the next time around, it’s 9/8”. Because he could play guitar/bass, he would show it on the drums what he was doing, then show how the riff would change on the guitar, so I could follow him. I really didn’t understand the time signatures too much, but I understood what he was doing with the drumming, taking away, adding, etc. I went by feeling, and we would go through these things, and it was cool because it felt different than the standard timing/groove. Since he would write music/riffs as well, a lot of his chops had these subtle timing adjustments here and there. This was my introduction to “off time”, as I referred to it. Side note, I’m no music theory person, so I could be stating shit incorrectly, but this is my understanding/explanation of it 🙂 And shout out to JohnD, he became a band director, wins awards, and is just awesome. Lots of great memories of being a teenager and jamming in his garage.

This leads to this track, it’s just guitar and drums, but I’m always amazed how a drummer can make something “flow” over timing changes, and Peter does exactly that. This started out as just a guitar template, played over a click track mapping of timing changes. When I heard Peter’s “remix” and drum add, well, it pretty much blew me away. People like Peter make me sound like I know what I’m doing, but in reality, I’m still just “jamming for funs”.
